Whales have inhabited the earth's oceans for millions of years and play a
vital role in maintaining the balance in ocean ecosystems. During the last few centuries
commercial whaling has depleated most populations of great whales down to a fraction of
their original numbers.
Commercial whaling and the
accompanying market for whale products have always and will always lead to legal and/or
illegal overcatches of whales. The whales will not be saved until the ban on commercial
whaling is followed by all nations.
