GREENPEACE TARGETS WHITE HOUSE TODAY FOR STAR WARS PROTEST
Washington, July 10, 2000 - The international environmental organization Greenpeace this afternoon brought its campaign to Stop Star Wars to President Clinton's doorstep. Greenpeace activists will use a 50-foot inflatable missile to urge the President to "Stop Star Wars."

Greenpeace is urging President Clinton to cancel the $60 billion Star Wars national missile defense program because it threatens to start a new nuclear arms spiral. The protest is set for 1 p.m. at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The planned Alaskan deployment of the missile system would break the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile (ABM) treaty. Clinton has been toying with the idea of giving a go-ahead to the controversial system before leaving office.

"Its time for Bill Clinton to put away his missile system and get on with nuclear disarmament," said Steve Shallhorn, Campaign Director for Greenpeace USA.

Two Greenpeace activists plead guilty to trespass in the Marshall Islands and were released. They were arrested on Friday after they unfurled a Stop Star Wars banner on Meck Island, where the interceptor missile was launched from Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands.

In addition, seven Greenpeace volunteers were arrested on Vandenberg Air Force base shortly before the scheduled launch time. They were released after the launch and charged with trespassing.
